Turkey to Resume Syrian-“Israeli” Mediation
Local Editor 30-01-2010
Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said on Friday that Turkey is willing to help the occurrence of a peace agreement between "Israel" and Syria if both countries agree on resuming the talks.
At the International Institute of Strategic Studies think-tank in London, Davutoglu said, as a response to questions about the talks, that the Syrian side already declared they want to continue from where they stopped.
On the other hand, the "Israeli" side has different views, for some are with and some are against. He further said that the 2008 "Israeli" war on Gaza ruined the possible peace deal between Syria and "Israel", under Turkish mediation.
On an official level, Syrian President Bashar Al Assad expressed interest in renewing negotiations with "Israel", especially that "Israel" said it is willing to resume the talks without preconditions.
US Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, discussed with Assad renewing peace talks between "Israel" and Syria, Assad said that "Israel" had to "declare frankly" it wants peace.
Throughout history, Turkey has had military cooperation with "Israel", yet relations between the two states have soured recently after Turkey's criticism to the "Israeli" war on Gaza.
Meanwhile, Syria improved its ties with Turkey, which leads "Israel" to be suspicious of the Turkish mediations.
Davutoglu further stated that Turkey was concerned with "Israel's" policy because of the Gaza war, yet he added that if an "Israeli" policy was criticized, that does not mean the end of the Turkish-"Israeli" relations.
