Fadlallah: Hizbullah would not Object Holding the Municipal Elections in June
Local Editor, 23-02-2010
Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Hassan Fadlallah told LBCI television on Tuesday that the June municipal elections, which were supposed to be held in May, will again be postponed depending on how long it takes to adopt Interior Minister Ziad Baroud's proposed amendments to the electoral law.
Hizbullah would not object holding the elections in June if the cabinet reaches consensus over the amendments, said Fadlallah, adding that his party wants a more up-to-date electoral law.
He also touched on the issue of amending Article 21 of the constitution, which pertains to the legal voting age, saying that it is crucial to ensure national consensus regarding such a matter to avoid political divisions in the country.
This comes after Monday's parliamentary session during which 66 of the 101 MPs who attended the session abstained from voting and the bill did not pass.
Fadlallah also commented on the Free Patriotic Movement's decision not to vote for the Article 21 amendment, saying that the party's decision will not jeopardize Hizbullah's strategic alliance with the FPM. He added that each party has its own positions.
