Indonesian President on Thursday urged his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama to prevent a U.S. Pastor Terry Jones to carry out its plans to burn the Holy Quran on Sept. 11, anniversary of the attacks in the United States.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has sent a letter Thursday to Barack Obama asking him to take steps to prevent the Quran being burnt, and avoid tensions between religions, said a spokesman for the presidency, Teuku Faizasyah.

"The project to burn the Quran raises very serious concern because it could cause conflict among the religions," said the spokesman. The letter was received by the U.S. government, he said.
"In this letter, wrote that President Yudhoyono of Indonesia and the U.S. is building a bridge between the West and Islam. If the Quran is burned, these efforts will be destroyed," added the spokesman.

The church "Dove World Outreach Center" ("Reaching a World of Peace") was asked to burn copies of the Koran before its doors in Bougainville, Florida, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
