Anonymous sources to An-Nahar: Berri’s Proposal an Old suggestion with Some New Ideas
Local Editor
Anonymous sources following up on the internal communication Berri started on Monday revealed that "The proposal (Berri suggested) is an old suggestion with some new ideas added to it."
Berri is seeking a consensus that would "avoid the harsh choice between a vote or a cabinet walkout [by March 8 ministers]," the report quoted Khalil as saying.
An-Nahar newspaper quoted an anonymous source saying that "Berri proposed that the "false witnesses file" be considered connected to the case of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's 2005 assassination and therefore there is no need for a new cabinet decree to transfer the matter to the Justice Council."
According to Berri's proposal, it would be up to the Justice Council itself to decide whether it has jurisdiction in the matter, the source said.
"If the Justice Council decides it does not have jurisdiction, the case goes to the regular judiciary, again without the need for a cabinet vote, and so the exit is legal and judicial and does not require the interference of the executive authority," the source (quoting Berri) told the Lebanese daily.
