Clinton Attacking Syrian President: Assad Lost Legitimacy, Not Indispensable
Local Editor
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has assaulted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, claiming that he was "not indispensable" and that he has lost his legitimacy.
"From our perspective, he has lost (his) legitimacy. Our goal is to see that the will of the Syrian people for a democratic transformation occurs," Clinton claimed.
"President Assad is not indispensible and we have absolutely nothing invested in him... remaining in power," she said.
At a joint press conference with visiting EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Clinton condemned the attacks and demanded Syria to fulfill its international responsibilities to protect diplomatic facilities.
"We demand that they meet their international responsibilities immediately to protect all diplomats and the property of all countries," she said.
Clinton also accused the Syrian government of trying to " deflect attention" from what it is doing by "either allowing or inciting this kind of behavior" against American and French embassies, asserting that this tactic "just doesn't work."

Clinton made the remarks after the U.S. embassy and the ambassador's residence in Damascus were attacked by some Syrians on Monday. The attacks were apparently triggered by the controversial visits by U.S. Ambassador in Syria Robert Ford and French Ambassador Eric Chevallier to the central Syrian city of Hama which has been gripped by anti-government protests.
