The Bahraini regime released 20-year-old poet Ayat al-Gormezi, after she was jailed and tortured for reading a poem in which she criticized the government during a pro-democracy protest.

The detention of the Bahraini student triggered an international outcry after news and pictures of her mistreatment started to spread during the period she was arrested. Ayat became a symbol of resistance in the anti-regime revolution taking place currently in Bahrain. This probably was the reason behind her release, for her 1-year sentence which was issued on her behalf had not been revoked.

The Bahraini pro-democracy poet was at first beaten in the face many time, and then was lashed with electric cables during her detention, and was forced to clear lavatories. However, after the international protest against the arrest of Ayat, the treatment she received in prison improved recently before her release.
When protests were at the climax sweeping across the Gulf country, Ayat recited a poem criticizing the al-Khalifa regime, and addressing King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa and condemning the force his Saudi-backed forces are practicing against the peaceful protesters.

Since the contagious Tunisian Jasmine revolt swept across the region, the people of Bahrain stood up for their rights and demanded reforms. Ever since, the Bahraini regime has been killing non-violent protesters and detaining a number of supporters, among them doctors, nurses, and even national symbols like athletes.
