Once again, the United States assured its unshakable commitment to its #1 ally's security.

The newly appointed US War Secretary Leon Panetta met with "Israel's" war minister Ehud Barak on Thursday, where the former stressed that Washington is strongly committed to military relations with Tel Aviv, AFP quoted Pentagon spokesman George Little as saying on Thursday.

Panetta stated that the US is dedicated to "ensuring that "Israel" maintains its qualitative military edge."

During the meeting, Panetta also said that the personal relationship between he and Barak will help to deepen security ties between the two countries. He added that "Israel" is "a most important ally of the United States and we are committed to its security."

The US official said he planned to visit "Israel" in October and clarified that "Israel" was an important ally and that the US was committed to its security. In his turn, Barak thanked him and said that "Panetta is a true friend of "Israel"."
Also, Barak's office issued a statement saying that the two officials "discussed all the strategic issues, the threats on "Israel", Iran's nuclear program and maintaining "Israel's" advantage in regards to the scenarios of instability in the Middle East."

This is the first time the two officials have met since the former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director was installed in his new post as war secretary. Panetta worked closely with "Israeli" intelligence when he was in charge of the CIA.

Barak met separately with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Both meetings were closed to the press, with officials offering general statements.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said "the US wanted to compare notes with Barak amid rapid changes in the region where street protesters have toppled authoritarian leaders."

"The talks with Barak, were an opportunity to reiterate our unshakable commitment to Israel's security," Toner said.
