Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched outside Bahrain's capital Manama on Friday to protest against the results of a "National Dialogue" that failed to bring real democratic reform in the Gulf island kingdom.

Protests took to the streets a day after Bahrain's king Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa accepted the recommendations of the National Dialogue.

Shouting "We want freedom" and waving Bahraini flags and banners that read "No to dialogue," protesters marched along Budaiya highway as helicopters from the security forces buzzed overhead.

Protesters said the dialogue was a shame, a view also articulated by Bahrain's main opposition party, "al-Wefaq" that earlier issued a strong statement condemning the report.

"Everything that's issued on the behalf of the National Dialogue does not represent the popular will," the party said in the statement.

"The government thought the results were great. We thought they were nothing. There's no fully elected government, no reforms to the voting system, it's a one-sided deal," Reuters news agency quoted al-Wefaq leader Sayyed al-Mousawi as saying.

Al-Wefaq has repeatedly called for an "elected government," an "elected parliament with full legislative powers," and a "fair and independent judicial system" in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, Saudi-backed Bahraini forces have massed around the US Embassy in the capital afraid that protests might reach the US diplomatic compound.
