Meeting Williams: Mikati to Defend Rights, Sovereignty with All Means

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed Tuesday Lebanon's concern over the ongoing "Israeli" violations of Lebanese sovereignty, urging the "United Nations to demand "Israel" to implement Security Council resolution 1701."
After meeting with U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams, Mikati stressed that "Lebanon will defend its rights and protect its sovereignty with all the available means."
Mikati informed the UN diplomat that the government accomplished in cooperation with the parliament a draft law that identifies the Lebanese maritime borders in order to preserve its rights.
The UN will be informed about it after its publication in the official gazette.
The PM renewed his condemnation of the attack on UNIFIL in the southern city of Sidon last week.
For his part, Williams commented on Monday's exchange of gunfire by saying, "this was a very disturbing incident."
"The bad news is that we cannot afford any incidents like this. You can go from an incident like this to war within a few hours," the UN envoy added.
Williams added that "he will soon meet with UNIFIL's Deputy Force Commander General Santi Bonfanti to find out the latter's conclusions on Monday's events."
In a parallel context, Williams urged "the Lebanese government to take action on the July 26 attack on UNIFIL," stressing "coordination between the UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese army."
"I believe it is imperative that the Lebanese government take concrete and firm action on this," said Williams.
"I also expressed my concern to the PM that the movement of UNIFIL convoys needs to be closely coordinated with the Lebanese Army Forces and with the Internal Security Forces to prevent any further attacks of this nature," he added.
