UNRWA: WB Witnesses Alarming Home Demolitions
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) stated on Tuesday that the "Israeli" demolitions of Palestinian homes in the occupied city of West Bank rose alarmingly, where in some cases it threatened the existence of entire communities, Agence France Presse reported.
UNRWA noted that some 356 homes were demolished in the first six months of 2011, compared to the 431 structures demolished in 2010. Furthermore, the UN agency added that due to the "Israeli" demolitions, some 700 hundred people were displaced in the first half of 2010, compared to the 594 people displaced in 2010.
On this level, UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness clarified, "Demolitions by the "Israeli" authorities in the West Bank have escalated alarmingly".
"Most demolitions have targeted already vulnerable Bedouin and herding communities. In many cases, demolition orders have been issued to virtually the whole community, leaving these communities facing a real danger of complete destruction", Gunness added.
Furthermore, UNRWA affirmed that the demolitions are taking place in the 60% of the West Bank, which is under "Israeli" occupation, leaving only 1% for the Palestinians to control.
Therefore, UNRWA spokesman believed that the aforementioned makes it virtually impossible for a Palestinian to obtain a permit for construction, at the time when "Israeli" settlements receive "preferential treatment in the allocation of water and land", and even approval for development plans.
Moreover, the UN agency stressed that the areas of demolitions are concentrated on those to be targets for "settlement expansion".
"Most disturbing of all is the clear link we now see between settlement expansion and demolitions and the forced displacement that result". AFP quoted Gunness as saying.
