US-Bahrain Renew Military “Defense” Pact
US officials and their counterparts of the Bahraini regime have decided on Friday to renew a military defense pact, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.
Both countries have been linked to a 10-year defense agreement inked on October 28, 1991, which was later renewed in the year 2001 for the same duration.
However, a Washington Post report indicated that in 2002, the US former George W. Bush administration secretly extended its pact with the Bahraini regime for another five years; until 2016. Pentagon officials declined to confirm the aforementioned dates, AFP stated.
On another hand, a US official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that "it would be accurate to say that it goes beyond that date of October 2011".
With reference to the Bahraini crackdown currently taking part in the Persian Gulf country, stated, "Obviously, it's a very delicate situation over there right now, so you never know what could change".
The joint "defense" agreements gives the US access to bases located in Bahrain, and allows it to home the US Fifth Fleet in the Bahraini waters.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the decades-old pact provides for consultations of any security crisis erupts in the Gulf country, and it gives the liberty for the US to train Bahraini forces.
Washington has also believed that the Gulf-located Bahrain stands as its major non-NATO ally in the region.
