It was a surprising announcement when "Israeli" War Minister Ehud Barak confirmed on Thursday the appointment of Brigadier General Ram Rotberg as the new Navy Commander, Zionist daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

The daily added that during the July 2006 "Israeli" war on Lebanon, Rotberg was the chief of naval intelligence, and was reprimanded by then-Chief of Staff Dan Halutz after Hizbullah was capable of targeting the "Israeli" Navy ship in the Lebanese waters.
The appointment was received with surprise by military officials, where some expressed that the named commander was not the frontrunner for the assigned post.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Rotberg will receive a promotion to the rank of major-general and replace General Eliezer Maron.
Some of Rotberg's achievements could be summed up by commanding the Flotilla 13 "Israeli" commando force, and leading one of the "Israeli" raid on the Karin A ship in 2002, which the "Israeli" navy claimed to be a Palestinian fleet smuggling weapons.

The aforementioned are the most "glorious" of Rotberg's achievement, for after he was reprimanded during the July 2006 war, his record was tainted and his reputation eroded.
However, to cover up for his naval "failure" during the war on Lebanon, the "Israeli" government later promoted him to commander of the Navy's Haifa base.
