US, Egypt Cancel Military Exercise “Bright Star”
The US and Egypt canceled a major joint military exercise after the unrest witnessed in Egypt during the past couple of months, leading the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak.
US officials said on Wednesday that their goal from canceling the exercise is to "allow Egypt's generals to focus on governing the country", Agence France Presse reported.
According to two US war officials, the "Bright Star" exercise usually takes place every two years, but will not be held this year.
"The decision was based on a mutual agreement in light of ongoing transition events and the military leadership serving in an interim executive role", one official told AFP.
Furthermore, the US war official added that the Bright Star exercise will take place in 2013, and will be planned by Egyptian officers starting next June.
On another hand, AFP reported an Egyptian official confirming the call off of the joint exercise, saying the armed forces now are focused on running the country, and cant conduct any exercise until after the elections are held.
"The duties which the military is conducting do not allow for joint exercises with any country", the Egyptian official stated.
The Exercise "Bright Star" is designed to improve the military-to-military relationships between the US, Egypt, and other countries including France, Italy, Kuwait, and Turkey.
