As Iran commissioned its first nuclear power plant in full operation, the visiting Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko welcomed Iran joining the global nuclear club.

The remarks were made during the inaugural ceremony marking the initial launch of Bushehr nuclear power plant.

"Although Bushehr power plant meets only three percent of Iran's total energy needs, undoubtedly with its launch Iran has entered a new era of development,' Shmatko announced.

Shmatko expressed confidence that Iran-Russia relations are not confined to this power plant, hoping that "this will be a sign of common understanding and growing friendly relations in all fields."

The Bushehr nuclear power plant joined the national power grid with a capacity of around 60 megawatts. Bushehr power plant started running with 40 percent of its capacity during the ceremony held Monday.

Meanwhile, Iranian and Russian nuclear officials signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) on Monday. The MoUs were inked at the end of the inaugural ceremony marking the preliminary commissioning of Bushehr nuclear power plant.

As per the MoU, the two sides will cooperate in the fields of commissioning atomic power plants and conducting stress tests on nuclear plants.
