Moallem: US, West Seek to Fragment Syria, Serve ’’Israel’’
Syrian foreign minister Walid Moallem blamed foreign governments Monday for financing and fomenting the Syrian opposition.
Speaking at the UN annual meetings in New York, Moallem stressed that "Syria would continue to defy any action by the UN on Syria," accusing "foreign governments for spreading Western hegemony over the countries of the Mediterranean and serving "Israel's" expansionist interests."
"How can we otherwise explain media provocations, financing and arming religious extremism?" he asked wondering about the purpose of such support:
"What purpose could this serve other than total chaos that would fragment Syria and consequently adversely affect its neighbors?"
Moallem acknowledged the need for political and economic reforms in the country, pointing to a June speech by President al-Assad calling for political pluralism, free and independent media, parliamentary elections and changes to the constitution reflecting these democratic initiatives.
"A timeline of no more than six months for implementing these changes is now in place," he added.
Explaining that "these legitimate demands were manipulated by armed groups to sow discord and sabotage security," Syrian Foreign minister emphasized that "the demands became the pretext for foreign interventions."
"By targeting the Syrian economy with sanctions, US and European Union jeopardize the interests and the basic daily subsistence needs of the Syrian people," Moallem said.
"Syrian people are determined to reject all forms of foreign intervention," he concluded.
