In response to the Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN, the US Congress blocked around $200 million of aid to the Palestinians, the London-based Independent newspaper reported on Saturday.

The aid that has been blocked was designated for food aid, health care, and state building projects, and according to the report, it was supposed to be transferred to Palestinians by today.
In this context the Independent indicated in its report, "The decision to delay the payments runs counter to the wishes of the Obama administration and reflects Congressional anger at Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's so far unrealized pursuit of Fatah-Hamas reconciliation and statehood recognition at the UN".

Furthermore, the report stated that this step tends to be the most concrete sign of the "seriousness of Congressional leaders' threats of an even wider halt to funding in the coming year" if the Palestinians continue with their bid at the UN.
This doesn't end here, for there have been further demands in the Congress, that call for withholding up to 600$ in the next financial year.
