Sarkozy: “Jewish State” a “Silly Idea”, Palestinian State Should be Recognized
French President Nicolas Sarkozy was quoted by French magazine Le Canard Enchaîne saying that the "Israeli" idea of a Jewish state is "silly".
In this context, Sarkozy referred to "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's allegations that peace can only be attained when the Palestinian Authority accepts the "Israeli" Jewish identity.
"It would be like saying that this table is Catholic", the French President stated, reiterating, "There are two million Arabs in "Israel"".
Moreover, Sarkozy blamed Netanyahu for leading the failure of negotiations between the "Israelis" and Palestinians. He stressed that "Netanyahu never fails to disappoint us [France, US]", especially after he announced the construction of 1,100 settlement units on Palestinian territories in al-Quds (Jerusalem), although Mahmoud Abbas agreed to restore negotiations.
Regarding the Palestinian bid for statehood at the UN, Sarkozy affirmed, "The Palestinians have been waiting for a state they deserve for 60 years now".
"Is it not fair that Palestine is recognized by the UN even in an observer status?" he further wondered.
The French President's remarks came on the sidelines of the 66th Meeting of the General Assembly at the UN Security Council previously last month.
