Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced that his country will continue to stand against attempts to impose unilateral sanctions to change the political systems in countries, and that his country will keep adhering to the UN Charter.

In a speech at the opening of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (SCRF), Medvedev said that the draft resolution on Syria at the Security Council which Russia thwarted allowed for using arms against it.

The Russian President affirmed that "his country cannot approve foreign military intervention in Syria," noting that "Russia and China presented a draft resolution on Syria that permits the Security Council to coordinate a unified stance and includes a vital formula for settlement, serving as a solid, sensible and high-quality document from which a true unified stance can be reached to guide relations with both the Syrian leadership and the opposition."

Stressing that "the Security Council's mission is to prevent the attempts by some countries to achieve their goals through military means, he concluded by calling for viewing the situation in Syria in its entirety.

"We completely support the demands made to the Syrian leadership not to use violence, but at the same time we stress the need for the Syrian opposition to extremists away of their movement," he emphasized.
