Lebanese Smuggling Weapons to Syria…Continuous Chapter
Local Editor
Experts and observers noted an increase in smuggling weapons from Lebanon to Syria.
Lebanese authorities seized more than 6 arms shipments headed to Syria over the past month, exposing the reality of weapons smuggled to Syria and the armed terrorist groups using them to
kill civilians, army and law enforcement members.
Researcher Peter Harling, from the International Crisis Group, told the French News Agency (AFP) that "smuggling networks that for years have operated along Syria's borders seem to have turned to weapons trafficking in recent months."
"It appears that a market has quickly developed in a country in which have not been weapons circulating easily beforehand," he added
Harling explained that smugglers were motivated by money.
Meanwhile, some media stressed that some Lebanese opposition members are involved in smuggling weapons. The Lebanese judiciary arrested Mohammad Hassan Ajem, the Syrian opposition figure, who confessed of transporting weapons from al-Beqa Lebanese district to Syria.
