A new modern designed museum, under the title of Simon Wiesenthal Center's Museum of Tolerance is supposed to be built in the occupied city of al-Quds (Jerusalem).

However, many archaeologists opposed this plan, for according to research, the site designated for the museum to be built on is on and adjacent to the Mamilla ancient Muslim cemetery.

In an unusual step, some 84 archaeologists wrote a letter speaking up against the museum plan, expected to be launched starting next month. The respected archaeologists addressed in their letter the center board members, al-Quds (Jerusalem) mayor, and the director of the enemy's antiquities authority.

They stated that the project involved "surreptitious and unscientific removal of hundreds of human burials". Furthermore, they criticized that the Simon Wiesenthal Center hurries to start the excavations before construction, and therefore resulting in poor archaeological practices.

One of the archaeologists protesting this act, is Tel Aviv University researcher Raphael Greenberg, who affirmed in a statement, "The case of Mamilla is a travesty of archaeological ethics", adding that the cemetery should be preserved as a demonstration of respect for al-Quds' (Jerusalem) shares heritage.
On his part, Harvey Eiss, a Yale University archaeologist also slammed the aforementioned decision, describing it as "desecration".
