Tunisia Elections Early Results: al-Nahda Islamic Party Claims Victory
Local Editor
According to early results from Tunisia's elections, the North African country's Islamic party al-Nahda (Arabic for Renaissance) has claimed victory in Tunisia's first democratic vote, reported sources.
"The first confirmed results show that al-Nahda has obtained the first place," said al-Nahda 's campaign manager Abdelhamid Jlazzi outside the party's headquarters in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, on Tuesday.
"We will spare no effort to create a stable political alliance ... We reassure the investors and international economic partners," Jlazzi added.
The four leading parties that participated in the elections include al-nahda, the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), a secular party that was legal in the former regime, the Democratic Forum for Labor and Liberties or Ettakatol, which is a socialist party, and finally the leftist secular party, Congress for the Republic (CPR).
The elections commission says official results will be released on Tuesday, and that the turnout was reportedly over 90 percent, exceeding all expectations.
