Larijani Congratulates Tunisian Islamic Party for Victory, Tunisian Leader Hails Iran Achievements
Iranian Speaker of Parliament Ali Larijani congratulated the Tunisian nation on the victory of the Islamic "al-Nahda" (Renaissance) Party in the country's first democratic elections.
He affirmed that the aforementioned victory reflected the enthusiasm of Tunisians for upholding Islamic principles in their country, Press TV reported.
Furthermore, Larijani noted that Tunisia is the flag-bearer of the Islamic Awakening, as it was the first country to trigger revolutions against tyranny and dictatorship in the region.
On his part, Leader of the Tunisian Islamic Party, Rashid el-Ghannouchi praised Iran for its scientific accomplishments despite the Western pressure and sanctions imposed on it.
In an interview with the BBC in Tunisia on Monday, el-Ghannouchi stated, "Resistance against Western sanctions and technological progress are among the achievements of Iran".
"Iran has managed to make progress despite global sanctions. Years-long resistance against strong international restrictions is not east", he further added.
After two decades in exile, the Islamic Party Leader returned to Tunisia after the US-backed ruler Zein el Abedin Bin Ali was ousted following the popular revolution in January.
Regarding a future Tunisian Islamic government, he clarified, "A council establishment employs all democratic instruments, such as elections, parliament, majority, minorities and else, and this democracy is the closest establishment to that of Islamic councils".
The Islamic Party, al-Nahda, democratically claimed victory as it participated in the first free elections in Tunisia.
