Tunisia's Islamic "al-Nahdha" party called for a coalition with secular groups after announcing taking the lead in national balloting.

In a sign of the strength of Islamist movements' revolts in Tunisia, "al-Nahda", legalized only six months ago, said it won 40 percent of the seats in the 217-seat National Constituent Assembly.

The party said it will begin consultations to form a unity government and no group will be excluded from talks.

"Al-Nahdha" has intelligently understood the rules of the political game," said Sofienne Ben Farhat, an independent political analyst. "This Islamist party, despite the votes that it has gained so far, knows it cannot rule alone."

"We do not want to monopolize power; we call for a coalition or a national unity government," said Ali Aridhi, a member the movement's executive bureau.

Tunisia's vote for the constituent assembly will write a new constitution.

Samir Ben Amor, a member of the executive board of the Congress for the Republic, said his party is ready to forge an alliance with "al-Nahdha" as long as that leads to a unity government.

"We welcome the proposal of "al-Nahdha" to form a coalition government, as it is a vital step in the right direction and takes into account the interests of the country at this critical time," he said.

A main task ahead for "al-Nahdha" would be to widen the coalition, analysts say.

"We are about to write a constitution and will face economic and developmental difficulties," Aridhi said. "This requires both technocrats and politicians as ministers. We will form the new government from the parties that won the most seats."
