Both the US and "Israel" contributed in negotiations to release the US-"Israeli" Mossad spy Ilan Grapel from Egyptian custody.

The "Israeli" "Arutz Sheva" website reported that Egypt has come out to be a big winner in the aforementioned negotiations, where US will be selling an F-16 fighter to Egypt, while "Israel" will be releasing 25 Egyptian prisoners.
After some five months of US-"Israeli" negotiations with the Egyptian authorities to reduce Grapel's espionage charge to "incitement", the three parties reached an agreement which benefited Egypt.

According to the deal, "Israel" must have taken 25 Egyptian prisoners, including three minors, to the Taba crossing on Thursday, to be transferred into Egypt in exchange for Grapel.
However, on its part, the US agreed to sell F-16 fighters to Egyptian authorities.

According to Egyptian military expert, Sameh Sayf al-Yazal, the US-Egypt agreement was agreed upon during negotiations over Grapel's release. Al-Yazal added that this deal had been rejected by the US for the past decades, during Mubarak's era, claiming to maintain military balance in the region.

It is said that "Israel" has been the main obstacle to sealing this deal in the past years, saying that if Cairo purchased F-16s, then its aerial capabilities would be equalized to those of the "Israeli" air force.
Yet after the development of the US F-35 warplanes, "Israel" now has no worries of Egypt possessing F-16 fighters.
