“Israeli”- Egyptian Spy Swap Deal Accomplished
Local Editor
"Israel" has released 25 Egyptian prisoners in an exchange deal for the US-"Israeli" spy Ilan Grapel held in Egypt's custody there since June.
The 25 Egyptians, who had all been convicted of smuggling drugs or weapons or infiltrating into occupied Palestine, were greeted by crowds as they crossed into Egypt at the Taba border crossing after being transported there from prison earlier Thursday.
Upon their arrival in Egypt, some of the prisoners told local TV about their confinement conditions.
"It was hard to be in prison, we were separated," one freed Egyptian, who spent six years in jail, said.
"I was told I'm getting out on Tuesday."
"We were all treated very badly," another prisoner stressed.
The exchange, reportedly mediated by the US, came after a successful swap between Palestinian Resistance group Hamas and the Zionist entity that freed more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners of whom around 400 have so far been released in return for the "Israeli" soldier Gilad Shalit.
Shortly after landing in "Israel", Grapel and his mother Irene met "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"It was a tough ordeal as I was isolated, but the guards were OK. What I wanted to eat, they gave me, including fresh fish. They paid for my meals, more than the average Egyptian would get," "Ynet" quoted Grapel.
For its part, US Department issued a statement welcoming its citizen's release.
"We thank the Governments of Egypt and "Israel" for their roles in reuniting him with his family," it said.
