Amid Western-"Israeli" escalating tone against the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iran started Saturday a four-day air defense military exercise aimed at upgrading its ability to protect its airspace and its nuclear facilities.

The "Thamen al-Hojaj" drills involve the elite Revolutionary Guard as well as Iran's regular army in an area covering 800,000 kilometers in eastern Iran, near the Afghan border.

Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili launched the first phase of the drills in which air defense units of the armed forces were positioned in predetermined locations.

A large number of combat, intelligence and operational divisions of the country's armed forces in addition to numerous passive defense units participate in the latest military maneuvers.

Military officials informed that the drill will include the use of "missile systems, advanced anti-aircraft artillery and various radar systems, as well as tactical maneuvers aimed at increasing the level of preparedness amid possible threats to the Islamic homeland's airspace, particularly with regards to the country's...nuclear centers."

Last June the Revolutionary Guard conducted an extensive drill in northwest Iran, during which surface-to-surface missiles were launched.

Tehran has repeatedly assured that its military might poses no threat to other countries, saying its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
