Bassil after Bloc’s Meeting: Open to Dialogue, We Aim to Fix Gov’t’s Performance Not to Topple It

Headed by its Leader MP General Michel Aoun, "Change and Reform" Bloc held a meeting Saturday discussing the latest internal developments.

Following the meeting, Energy Minister Jebran Bassil said: "Our participation or boycott of ministerial sessions stands on several issues."

Clarifying that "President Michel Suleiman and Prime Najib Mikati have the constitutional right to set the governmental agenda," Bassil stressed that Lebanese rights are more important than the funding of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

"The pace of government's functions in implementing projects is not satisfactory," Bassil said adding that "Change and Reform" bloc minister aim at fixing the government's performance and not force its collapse.

Explaining that the discussions over the 2012 Lebanese budget have been delayed for more than two months, Bassil emphasized that the topic turns to a governmental priority.

"The budget is more important that the 45 billion liras that would be used to fund the STL," he said.

The minister also criticized the government for disregarding the implementation of several development and investment projects in water and electricity.
 
"The wage boost is also a top priority and should be discussed during Wednesday's session," said Bassil noting to "a long list of issues which are a priority for the people."

Unveiling that the Bloc is ready to discuss issues with both the President and PM, the minister accused some parties without naming them of "intentionally seeking to keep certain sects away from several posts in state institutions."

"Dialogue with all officials will remain open," he concluded.
