Russian FM: We Reject Any Foreign Military Intervention in Syria
Local Editor
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday reiterated his country's rejection of any foreign military intervention in Syria.
Lavrov, remarks came during a press conference on the outcomes of Russia's Foreign policy in 2011, underlined Russia's insistence on the necessity of finding political settlement in Syria through an immediate launching of an internal national dialogue after violence, regardless of its source, is to be immediately halted.
Lavrov underscored Russia's support to the efforts exerted by the Arab League's observers mission in Syria. He renewed Russia's criticism and rejection to the smuggling of weapons operations to Syria as to support the gunmen.
Minister Lavrov underscored Russia's rejection to the attempts being made as to create a humanitarian crisis in Syria, describing these attempts as "rejected and fruitless".
Lavrov said " there is a truth which none can deny represented in the smuggling of the weapons to the gunmen and to the extremists in Syria who tried to exploit the protest movement to achieve their goals to usurp power," lashing out at the so-called "aid convoys to Syria" with the aim of creating the impression of humanitarian catastrophe.
In October last year, Russia and China vetoed a European draft resolution on Syria that sought to impose sanctions on the country. Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in favor of President Bashar al-Assad.
