Gaza: Bakeries to Close Due to Fuel Shortage

Local Editor
The president of Gaza's bakery owners association said Wednesday that bakeries in the coastal enclave are suffering from a lack of fuel.

Abdul Nasser al-Arjami said that many bakeries will have to close down in the next few days due to the current fuel crisis, reported Ma'an news agency.
The Gazan ministry of economy provided enough fuel to bakeries to last for five days, al-Arjami said, with establishments now purchasing fuel on the black market.
Gaza depends heavily on fuel smuggled from Egypt to keep its lone power station on line. But as supplies were severely reduced from Egypt, the station was shut down last Tuesday, and Gaza has faced blackouts of up to 18 hours per day.
Gaza's energy supply is bad at the best of times, with a rickety infrastructure system badly degraded due to the ongoing siege on the coastal enclave.
