Mouallem from Germany: Syria recognizes Lebanon independence
Source: AFP, 18-01-2008
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem said during his visit to Germany that Syria recognizes Lebanon's independence.
"The nonexistence of diplomatic representation does not mean otherwise," he said.
Mouallem said that Syria will play a very constructive role in Lebanon and in achieving peace in the Middle East.
German Foreign Minister Frank Walter-Steinmeier noted the sensitive phase the peace process is going through and called on Syria to use its influence in Lebanon "allowing the establishment of a stable government."
"Diplomatic representation with Lebanon will be achieved once the crisis in Lebanon is solved, a president elected and a national-unity government reflecting true representation is established," Mouallem said.
He also reiterated Syrian support to the Arab League's ongoing efforts to break Beirut's presidential deadlock.
