Bahrain Refuses to Release Suffering Al-Khawaja to Denmark

Saudi-backed troops in Bahrain have attacked civilian protesters, who were calling for the release of detained human rights activist, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja.
The demonstrators were gathered outside the capital Manama on Sunday, holding a funeral for a woman, who had been martyred due to teargas inhalation several days ago.
They shouted slogans against the government.
Earlier in the day, the Bahraini regime rejected a request to transfer to Denmark the jailed al-Khawaja, who has been on hunger strike for two months and also holds Danish nationality.
"The handover of accused and convicted persons to foreign countries takes place under specific conditions ... This does not apply in Abdulhadi al-Khawaja's case," the Supreme Judiciary Council official claimed.
Front Line Defenders, a Dublin-based non-governmental organization, warned Tuesday after a visit to Manama that al-Khawaja, who had shed 25 percent of his body weight, was at risk of organ failure."
Bahraini authorities admitted that "he had lost some 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and was showing signs of low hemoglobin."
For its part, Bahrain's largest opposition movement al-Wefaq urged the international community to intervene and press for his release.
