Charbel and Suleiman Hail Municipal By-Elections in Lebanon As Calm, Democratic

Lebanese Interior Minister Marwan Charbel declared the municipal by-elections "were calm and democratic due to the wisdom and the awareness of the citizens who were mindful of the importance of calming spirits down at a time when Lebanon is going through a difficult phase."

In an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station, the Minister also voiced hope that the calm conditions "would persist until the 2013 parliamentary elections."
Municipal by-elections in 40 Lebanese towns Kicked off on Sunday in order to elect 37 municipal councils. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. local timing in an elections process that lasted 12 hours.

For his part, President Michel Suleiman lauded on Monday the efforts of the Interior and Defense Ministries in staging the municipal by-elections on Sunday, congratulating them on their accomplishment.

He said: "The elections were an example of democratic practice in Lebanon."
"They were a positive sign of rotation of power at a time where the region lacks locally elected councils," he remarked.

Media outlets reported on Monday that the turnout of the poll reached 70 percent. 20 councils have won uncontested.

Charbel had hoped during a press conference that the Lebanese politicians would reach soon an agreement over the electoral law.
