Lebanon’s Tripoli Blunders in Insecurity, Lebanese Army In Control

Local Editor
The northern Lebanese city of Tripoli has been blundering in a series of clashes and dangerous insecurity trembles, launched by armed extremist groups linked to the Future Movement against the Lebanese army.
The armed extremist groups claimed their attack was in response to the arrest of Shadi al-Mawlawi, who was taken to custody by the Lebanese General Security for charges of contacting a terrorist affiliation.
The pretext of al-Mawlawi's arrest gave the Future Movement-linked armed groups the green light to launch their communal riots against the army and civilians in the northern Lebanese capital.
After 48 hours of intensive sporadic clashes, the Lebanese Army warned that all armed personnel should immediately evacuate the streets of the city, giving them until 13:00 pm Monday to retreat from their fronts.
According to al-Intiqad correspondent, Sunday night witnessed high tensioned clashes in the area of Bab al-Tabaneh and Jabal Mohsen, during which all types of light and heavy weaponry were exploited.
Sources from the "Arab Democratic Party" indicated that the clashes that occurred Monday dawn, led to one death and 7 injuries; therefore increasing the toll of victims to 5 deaths and 50 injuries.
Also, all schools and universities in Tripoli and its suburbs have been closed due to the unstable security situation.
Lebanese Army soldiers were deployed on Sunday in Tripoli's "Syria" street, and in all areas that witnessed clashes in the past hours.
Lebanese Army vehicles were stationed in neighborhoods from which armed groups withdrew.
While 3 Army vehicles were patrolling in Syria Street, they were subjected to live rounds, to which the army also responded with fire.
On its part, The Higher Defense Council convened on Sunday, in presence of President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and discussed Tripoli's security situation.
The Council praised the Lebanese Army and Security apparatuses for their performance in maintaining security, halting terrorist clashes and arms smuggling in all Lebanese areas.
Moreover, the Higher Defense Council gave instructions to the Army and security bodies and distributed tasks to relevant ministries and bodies to follow up the situation in Tripoli.
