Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri sent a reply to French President Nicolas Sarkozy concerning the latter's condemnation of the closure of the parliament.
"We wish for the election of a president on a consensual basis," Sarkozy told Al-Jazeera television. "We cannot accept the ongoing closure of the parliament by its speaker," he added.
In his response letter, Berri recalled his efforts over the national-dialogue roundtable and pointed out that he has called for 14 presidential sessions aimed at electing a new president.
"I hope you are aware that Lebanon is an independent and sovereign country," Berri added.
