The notorious incidents of September 13, 1993 when "some side" opened fire and killed a number of civilians demonstrating in Dahiyeh, the deadly incidents of Hay al-Sullom in Dahiyeh in 2004, when "some side" opened fire at a demonstration for mini buses' drivers and the bloody incident of el-Raml el-'Ali also in Dahiyeh in 2006, when "some side" opened fire and killed innocent children taking part in a demonstration. In 2008, Mar Mekhayel, in Dahiyeh, joins the list. "Some side" opened fire and killed six unarmed people including aid workers evacuating the wounded. Dispersing demonstrators in Beirut's southern suburb is always carried out with live bullets, not with hoses and water. The six martyrs and the 50 injured people all fell when they received direct shots at close range from one single side. What happened?
At around 4pm local time, a group of young men set out from the Chiyah region that has been suffering from two days of blackout. They set a few tires on fire at the Chiyah - Mar Mekhayel crossroad.
Lebanese army troops that are constantly present in that region, moved to put the fire out and disperse the demonstrators. They beat the demonstrators with their rifles and batons.
Shortly afterwards, cameramen spotted armed men on the rooftops of buildings in the Ain el-Remmeneh region east of Chiyah. The clothes they were wearing suggest they are military personnel, unless it was proven otherwise.
In the meantime, Amal Movement officer of coordination with the Lebanese Army Ahmad Hamza, was trying to pacify the situation, but suddenly gunshots were fired by army soldiers followed by a state of panic and then the demonstrators dispersed only to without Hamza who was lying dead on the ground. Next to him were a number of injured people. The outrage of the protesters broke the silence of the awe. They set more tires on fire. Their numbers were increasing and the soldiers were retreating.
More shots were heard and then seen coming out from buildings in Ain el-Rommeneh. More people fell on the ground with M16 gunshots in their bodies, which is the official army weapon.
Mahmoud Mansour, Youssef Chokeir and the young Mahmoud Hayek were shot in the chest and neck. They passed away shortly before reaching the hospital. Minutes later, Ahmad Al-Ajouz and first aid worker Mostafa Amhaz were also shot at close range in the upper part of their bodies while giving first aid to the injured.
The bloody night ended with army armored vehicles bursting into the Sfeir region which was not the scene of any protest. There also, army soldiers opened fire at houses, stores and restaurants injuring a young man having dinner.
There are facts and evidence recorded on camera to prove that what happened on this black Sunday was premeditated. It also poses questions about the conduct of this army brigade which had reportedly replaced a previous brigade one day before the incident.
