BEIRUT-Lebanon's Hizbullah holds a mass funeral for its martyred commander Imad Moghnieh in Beirut on Thursday to calls of revenge against its sworn enemy the "Israeli" occupying regime.
Big crowds are expected in Beirut's Muslim-Shiite Muslim southern suburb to bid farewell to Moghnieh, a top Hizbullah leader seen as a legend but on the US most wanted list accused of killing hundreds in attacks on "Israeli" and Western targets.
Hizbullah accused "Israel" of killing Moghnieh on Tuesday by planting a bomb in his car in Damascus but "Israel" denied any involvement in the attack.
Moghnieh's funeral will take place shortly after a rally by the 'March (Feb.) 14' coalition to mark the third anniversary of the killing of former premier Rafik al-Hariri.
Thousands, many waving red, white and green Lebanese flags, began gathering in pouring rain at Martyrs' Square in the center of Beirut to listen to speeches by the coalition leaders, including Hariri's son, Saad.
The 'March (Feb.) 14' is locked in a 15-month power struggle with the National Lebanese Opposition that has left Lebanon without a president since November.
Iran blamed "Israel" for Moghnieh's assassination while Syria described it as a "terrorist attack".
Several Palestinian and Lebanese allies of Hizbullah called on the group to avenge his death, but Hizbullah has only said that its conflict with "Israel" was "a very long one".
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the group that has a strong political and military force in Lebanon, will address the crowd at the funeral via a video link.
Moghnieh's coffin, draped in a Hizbullah flag and flanked by four men in military uniform, was on Wednesday laid in a hall where his family and leaders of the Shiite group received condolences.
Moghnieh's brother was killed in a car bomb in Beirut in 1994. Reports at the time suggested Imad had been the target.
