In a press conference after a meeting of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), MP General Michel Aoun said that the topics discussed included the events of the past week, most significantly February 14, which joined the "commemoration of Hariri" and "the martyrdom of jihadist Imad Moghnieh."
The MP condemned the murder of Imad Moghnieh, a top Hizbullah official assassinated by a car bomb last Tuesday in Damascus, and said it was a very serious incident and that the whole world was "afraid."
"We denounce the assassination of Imad Moghnieh and we cannot tell those who have been violated not to retaliate," he said, adding that the FPM considered the murder an attack on Lebanon and Syria.
However, "there seems to be a generation of politicians who wish to return to war," Aoun said. "The February 14 speeches reminded us of a political obsession with the name Aoun. Some men in politics cannot speak without mentioning my name. This is reminiscent of a sexual mania." He suggested they resort to psychologists to analyze and resolve this mania.
Regarding the clashes Beirut has witnessed since Thursday night, he commented, "We tried to understand the provocative rhetoric of the 'March (Feb.) 14' forces on the commemoration of February 14, and we hope the threats and resulting clashes will be ended soon by national security forces."
On the travel warning issued by the Foreign Ministry of Saudi Arabia, Aoun commented that he did not understand why Saudi Arabians were afraid to travel to Lebanon.
The FPM leader ended with a response to the statement made by former American Ambassador to Lebanon David Satterfield. "When the teacher speaks, his inferiors do not dare to respond, but correct their behavior accordingly."
"We are afraid that they (the government) will take Satterfield's position in the negotiations this week," Aoun concluded.
