The European Union along with Western officials condemned the escalation of the Egyptian events in wake of the clashes between security forces and supporters of the ousted President Mohammad Mursi.

In Germany, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told journalists, "Any further bloodshed in Egypt must be prevented," calling the interim government to permit peaceful protests.

Moreover, he said Germany also expected the other political forces "to clearly distance themselves from violence, to not call for violence and to not act in violent ways."

Also, Westerwelle stated that the German government is "extremely worried" from the "very dangerous" situation in Egypt.

"We are calling on all political forces in Egypt to immediately return to dialogue and to negotiations in order to prevent a further escalation in violence," the German Foreign Minister added.

For his part, Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton said, "The reports of deaths and injuries are extremely worrying."

"We reiterate that violence won't lead to any solution and we urge the Egyptian authorities to proceed with utmost restraint," the Associated Press quoted Mann as saying.

Protests on Wednesday escalated as security forces cracked down on pro-Mursi protesters in several areas in Egypt.

Forces cleared the sit-ins where demonstrators staged their protests, where they found weapons in the camps.

For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior stated that the protesters took women and children as human shields, which threatens national security and communal stability.

"Protesters hold full responsibility for any security setbacks or human casualties," the Ministry warned.
