The General Directorate of Lebanese General Security announced Tuesday the dismantling of a terrorist cell that was plotting assassinations and bombings in several Lebanese regions.

It further added that "the detainees were interrogated and referred to the military judiciary together with the seized material, which include explosives, communication devices and silenced weapons."

The directorate stressed that it "will not hesitate to pursue terrorist groups, subversive gangs and illegal emigration networks - in coordination with the rest of the security agencies - in order to preserve the safety of citizens and the security and stability of the country."

Meanwhile, it mentioned that two of those arrested were Syrians and a third was Lebanese.
The announcement comes after a wave of arrests by the various security services in the wake of four deadly bombings that rocked Lebanon - two in Beirut's southern suburbs and two in Tripoli.
According to Lebanese dailies information, preliminary probes with detainees unveiled that they were tasked with dangerous operations by targeting specific regions and March 8 and 14 political figures based on a terrific plot that could drag Lebanese to internal fighting.

The detainees were willing to sow small bombs, ranging between 200g to 500g, in specific regions. They were up to explode a bomb in Down Town specifically, then Beirut Southern Suburb, Kaslik or Jounieh, Achrafieh, Attarik al-Jadideh and other regions outside Beirut in order to drag Security Forces into probes in these operations undergone on all over the country as if it is in a political battle.

They further revealed that detainees confessed that they were plotting to assassinate March 8 and 14 figures in order to exchange accusations and that they would have started with March 14 party because previously targeted.
