A trained army sapper revealed to be a former Australian soldier who went absent without leave was killed in Syria in January, as was reported about him by the ABC radio on Wednesday.
Caner Temel, an Australian man revealed to be a soldier in the army who went absent without leave in 2010, was killed while fighting with the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" [ISIL] in Syria.
Australia's assistant defense minister, Stuart Robert, told ABC radio that, "He went absent without leave in September 2010 ... If you go awol after 28 days and we can't find you, we'll discharge you."
Temel had served 17 months in the defense force as a sapper working in a construction squadron. Robert acknowledged that Temel would have undergone arms training and "a limited amount of explosives work."
Robert said options were being studied to cancel the Australian passports of dual-nationals fighting in Syria.
The number of Australians fighting in Syria is unknown, yet a December 2013 report highlighted a range between 23 and 205 people.
