’Israel,’ US Consider Training Syrian Militants with Saudi Arabia
Local Editor
Top "Israeli" and US military officials discussed the possibility of launching a joint operation with Saudi Arabia to train foreign-backed militants in Syria, said the "Israeli" Haaretz newspaper on Monday.
The New York Times newspaper reported that a meeting took place between the Zionist Chief of Staff, Benny Gantz, and the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, in al-Quds on Monday.
The two discussed the prospects of security cooperation between Tel Aviv and some Arab countries in the Persian Gulf.
He said, "What I mean is the Gulf states in particular, who heretofore may not have been as open-minded to the potential for cooperation with ‘Israel,' in any way."
Dempsey said that the talks included "an outreach to other partners who may not have been willing to be partners in the past."
The US military officials said that cooperation would include intelligence-sharing, "joint counterterrorism" exercises, and perhaps looking for how "Israeli" and Saudi troops could jointly work on the training of Syrian opposition fighters.
Speaking to reporters, Gantz said that based on the conversations, they can try and turn some of the "threats" that they face into an opportunity.
Meanwhile, Dempsey described the meetings as a chance to look further into the future.
