Rivlin, a member of Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party, will become occupied Palestine's 10th president.

Speaking to Knesset members after the poll, Rivlin declared, "I stand here before you with a great mission. Long live the "Israeli" democracy! Long live "Israel!""

Rivlin opposes the creation of a Palestinian state, putting him at odds with the platform adopted by Netanyahu.

He is also a supporter of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, another central issue in the dispute between the Zionists and the Palestinians.

Moreover, Netanyhau congratulated Rivlin on his win, saying that, "You come from the deep well of "Israeli" heritage, Zionist heritage, Jewish heritage, values I know well."

"We appreciate the long road you and your father have made ...You are the first citizen of "Israel,"" Netanyahu said.

Rivlin defeated MP Meir Sheetrit, by 63 to 53 in a secret run-off ballot.

He will succeed outgoing Zionist President Shimon Peres who ends his seven-year term in July.
