British twin sisters are suspected to have travelled to Syria via the Turkish city of Istanbul to join their brother in fighting with militants from the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" [ISIL], as the Daily Mail said on Sunday.

The Daily Mail reported that two 16-year-old twins from the city of Manchester, have been the subject of a police manhunt after they went missing last Thursday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said, "The girls flew from Manchester International Airport to Istanbul. Since their departure the girls have been in contact with their family."

Moreover, police are trying to determine how the girls secured the money to make their trip, which began with a flight to Istanbul.

Manchester Police confirmed they have a line of contact with them; however the sisters refuse to come back in spite of their parents' pleas.

British security experts estimate up to 500 Britons have travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight for the so-called "Islamic State" [IS], as named by its reclusive "ISIL" leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
