UK Military Planning to Set Up 3 New Bases in Middle East
Local Editor
The UK is considering setting up or expanding three military bases in the Middle East as part of the fight against the so-called "Daesh" [ISIL] extremist group, The Times published on Wednesday, citing a source at the UK Ministry of Defence.
"This work is still in development and no final decisions have yet been made," she said.
According to the source, an infantry battalion could be sent to Al-Minhad in the United Arab Emirates [UAE].
"You could see an infantry battalion based in al-Minhad, being able to train alongside the Emirates," the source told The Times.
The al-Minhad airbase near Dubai is already used by troops flying in and out of Afghanistan.
A training post could also be set up in Oman while the Royal Navy is further hoping to expand its military base in Bahrain to accommodate more naval forces and larger warships, according to the source.
The UK had been considering an increase in its military presence in the region for a while, director of the Royal United Services Institute think-tank, Professor Michael Clarke said, as reported by The Times.
The news came as the US is preparing to go on the offensive against Daesh in collaboration with the UK and other allies.
