UK Vows ’Significant’ Support for ’Moderate’ Syrian Opposition, Drones Strike in Iraq for 1st Time

Britain will make "a significant contribution" to equip and train the so-called "moderate" Syrian opposition to defeat both so-called "Daesh" ["ISIL"] extremists and the Syrian government, its foreign secretary said on Monday.

UK Vows 'Significant' Support for "Moderate" Syrian Opposition,
Drones Strike in Iraq for 1st Time
The statement came after a London meeting between British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Hadi al-Bahra of the opposition, the so-called "Syrian National Coalition" [SNC].
"The UK is helping the opposition establish security and governance, and to deliver essential services. This includes life-saving search and rescue training..." Hammond said.
"We are providing non-lethal equipment and the UK expects to make a significant contribution to the US-led Train and Equip program," Hammond said in the statement.
"Assad can play no future role in Syria," he said.
Meanwhile, Britain and other countries opposed to the Syrian government increased aid to the opposition in the country in September.
Furthermore, the British Ministry of Defense said on Monday that Britain has used its unmanned aerial drones in Iraq for the first time to strike "Daesh" extremists.
The MoD said that a remotely-piloted Reaper aircraft successfully launched a missile attack on "Daesh" extremists near Baiji, north of Baghdad, over the weekend.
The Reaper drones have been re-deployed from Afghanistan.
The US-made Reapers drones are remotely controlled by pilots based at the Waddington Royal Air Force base in Lincolnshire, eastern England.
Britain also has eight Cyprus-based RAF Tornado fighter jets conducting bombing raids in Iraq.
Meanwhile, other RAF aircraft, including tankers, transport and surveillance platforms, also continue to support the so-called coalition air operations.
