In a new ground progress, the Syrian army have killed 50 terrorists in an ambush in the largely armed groups-controlled countryside east of Damascus, according to state media.
"An army unit killed 50 terrorists in an ambush while they tried to flee Mediya village," SANA news agency reported late Wednesday, using the standard official term for the rebels.
A military source quoted by the agency said the ambush took place late Wednesday when the rebels were trying to escape from the town of Mayda'a towards al-Dmayer, in eastern Ghouta, northeast of the capital.
The soldiers also destroyed several vehicles.
In recent months, Syrian authorities have stepped up their operations in eastern Ghouta, the main opposition stronghold on the outskirts of Damascus.
The Syrian army on Thursday continued its military operations against terrorist organizations across the country, killing large number of their members, including the "ISIL" and al-Nusra Front terrorists.
Separately, the Syrian troops killed tens of the al-Qaeda-linked groups in the vicinity of the towns of Nubul and Zahra in the northern province of Aleppo, according to the official SANA news agency.
The extremist groups have recently unleashed a wide-scale offensive against the two towns.
However, the towns' National Defense Forces [NDF], a pro-government militia, succeeded to fend off the attacks so far.
