THE DAILYSTAR:
Terror Ops Room at Roumieh Prison Dismantled
Lebanese newspapers on Tuesday focused on the Roumieh prison events that took place on Monday, as the Lebanese security forces raided the building and performed a ‘cleaning' campaign without shedding one drop of blood, especially after information that the masterminds behind the terrorist attacks taking place in Lebanon are centered there in block B.
In a statement, the ISF said some prisoners from Bloc B were transferred to Bloc D. "When guards began transferring a number of prisoners from block B to D, inmates started riots and burned mattresses to protest the security measures," the statement pointed out.
As the operation got underway, Lebanese Army helicopters hovered at low altitudes above the overcrowded complex.
The ISF stressed that no injuries were recorded and the situation is under control.
The ISF said some of the prisoners burned their mattresses in protest but no casualties were recorded. "The situation inside the Roumieh prison is under control," the ISF statement.
According to as-Safir, Interior Minister Nuhad Mashnouq decided to ignore the opposition of other ministers from the Future party other from the political sphere, and gave orders to the Lebanese security forces to take action. The paper added that Mashnouq following the Jabal Mohsen crime, took advantage of the situation to start the operation.
Interior Minister, who arrived at the facility to supervise the operation, had said that the implementation of the security plan at Roumieh began after investigations showed that some inmates are linked to security acts in Lebanon. But Mashnouq said the operation was "not related" to the issue of the Army and police captives held in the outskirts of the northeastern Arsal.
He further told as-Safir that the inmates were taken to the new building only ‘wearing their clothes' without any mobile phones or other equipment. He stated that if ‘one mobile phone enters the new building the head of the soldier or army official in charge will be beheaded.' He also underscored that the measures will continue, adding that he will give priority to the search measures in the prison and will not allow any breach of law any longer.
As-Safir also quoted him saying that "most important now is national coherence to confront terrorism, in order to preserve the country."
As-Safir reporter in Syria noted that the Roumieh operation actually made al-Nusra front loose its balance as it watches the measures taken without being able to do anything.
On a related note, the accomplishment of Roumeih did not stop the army from proceeding its follow up on further follow up on the terrorist attack of Jabal Mohsen. Sources told An-Nahar newspaper that ten people related to the terrorist Ousama Mansour were being monitored, noting they are wandering around with explosive belts in Tripoli.
Moreover, a security source told the Daily Star that security forces raided the prison on Monday, clearing the jail's block B after intercepting calls between militants and members of the cell behind Saturday's suicide bombings in Tripoli that killed at least nine civilians and injured more than 30.
The source stressed that the operation's purpose was first to separate prisoners in well-monitored cells and to end the previous chaos, where they had illicit access to mobile phones and internet. In response, al-Nusra front warned that all the Lebanese would pay for what it called the Lebanese Army's reckless acts.
The ISF started its operation on Monday at 7 a.m., and a security perimeter has been imposed around Roumieh, the security source noted.
