American Toddler Accidentally Shoots father, Pregnant Mother

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot his father in the buttocks and pregnant mother in the shoulder after he found an unsecured gun in his mother's purse in an Albuquerque, New Mexico, motel on Saturday.
The toddler, who was looking for an iPad when he found the gun, managed to fire one bullet.
The boy's father was treated and released from hospital shortly after, while the boy's mother, who is eight-months pregnant, is still under observation at a local hospital.
The boy's mother, Monique Villescas, said that she had bought the gun Friday. Justin Reynolds, the boy's father, was convicted of a felony and is legally barred from owning a firearm.
Albuquerque Police Department Officer Simon Drobik said that Villescas and Reynolds might be facing felony negligence charges.
"On the kid's side, it's a horrible accident that happened, but the parents are still culpable," he said. "They should have secured the gun."
The family, including a two-year-old, grandmother and two pit bull dogs, had been living in the motel for a week prior to the incident.
Following the shooting, the children were placed with child protective services and the dogs were taken by animal control.
Some 30,000 deaths a year in the United States involve firearms. The majority are suicides; many others are murders. But some involve children laying their hands on loaded weapons.
In 2011 alone, 140 children and teenagers died as a result of an unintentional shooting, more often than not inside a home, according to a study from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Several thousand more sustained non-fatal injuries.
