A defense lawyer stated a Bahraini court had found 11 Bahrainis guilty of involvement in a deadly bomb attack targeting police last year and sentenced three of them to death.

Attorney Mohammed al-Tajir said the other eight convicted were sentenced to life imprisonment and would have their citizenship stripped.

The names of those sentenced to death and those stripped of citizenship were not immediately available.

Authorities previously claimed the three police officers were killed on March 3, 2014 as they were dispersing "rioters and vandals" on the outskirts of the capital Manama.
One of those killed was a police officer from the nearby United Arab Emirates who was deployed to help bolster security in the tiny island kingdom.

The court heard that the defendants detonated the bomb after mobilizing protesters to join a funeral in Daih village.
Prosecutors mentioned defendants had planted three bombs in all but only one was detonated.

They charged that two of the defendants were among the founders of the little-known Al-Ashtar Brigades, a group that had reportedly claimed responsibility for several attacks in the kingdom.

The Bahraini opposition movement sought greater political rights from the governing monarchy. Young protesters frequently clashed with riot police in street skirmishes.
Bahrain crushed the protests after neighboring Gulf nations of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates sent in troops.

At least 89 people had been martyred in clashes with security forces, while hundreds had been arrested and put on trial.
