Four senior officials of al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, al-Nusra Front, including its military chief Abu Humam al-Shami, had been killed in an explosion in the northwest province of Idlib.

Abu Humam al-Shami was killed by an explosion during a meeting of al-Nusra Front leaders in the village of Hobait in the Idlib province.
Insurgent sources declared at least three other al-Nusra Front commanders were killed in the blast; Abu Omar al-Kurdi, a founder of the organization, Abu Albara al-Nasari and Abu Musaab al-Falastini were said to be killed.
However, the so-called "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights", an organization known as supportive to the , stated there was conflicting information on where Abu Humam had been killed.
The Syrian state news agency SANA also cited a military source saying the army had carried out "concentrated strikes" against al-Nusra and other Takfiri groups in the Abu al-Dhuhur area, which lies to the northeast of Hobait.
Conversely, insurgent sources initially said the US-led alliance had killed Abu Humam in an air strike. But a coalition spokesman said it had not conducted air strikes in the province during the past 24 hours.
